Emmerdale’s Ash Palmisciano, who plays Matty Barton, has hinted at more drama for his character. Currently, Matty is in prison on remand, accused of stabbing Samson Dingle and trying to keep his identity as a trans man hidden from fellow inmates.
Despite his family’s desperate attempts to secure his release, Matty has been too frightened to shower or leave his cell. However, things are about to change as he gets a new cellmate, Les.
Sharing more details about the upcoming plot twists, Ash appeared on ITV’s This Morning. “Matty’s cellmate confronts him and says, ‘Look, I know something’s up with you. The other guys here are questioning you, you’re being too quiet, you’re not quite right’. So he has to say… this guy wants to help him, and he has to say, ‘Okay, this is who I am’,” reports the Mirror.

“He’s got this cellmate who’s kind of defended him. He’s a bit of a rough diamond, he’s a good guy who’s ended up in there and he wants to look after Matty. He needs to know the truth. But once it’s out there’s other characters in there that aren’t as understanding.”
Ash further added: “Matty’s incredibly vulnerable, and let’s face it, being inside and having an extra added target on your back is of course going to cause a threat. There’s lots to come and as I said it’s been so exciting to do.”
Ash has spilled the beans on a shocking storyline twist involving Matty, revealing to the press: “Amy reveals to Robbo, who is a very nasty transphobic horrible guy that Matty’s trans. It’s the worst possible thing that could have happened to Matty he just thought he was on the cusp of getting a hold of it and surviving and he was going to be all right and now he’s been outed by his wife, which is unbelievable.”

Ash further disclosed: “Matty thinks at first there’s absolutely no way that she would tell him on purpose so what has he done to her? So he’s quite protective of her at first.” He also added: “Also, when you’re in a cell you have a lot of time in your head and the only thing you can do is think. I think he’s going round and round and round about why this has happened and what’s going to happen next.”
