Coronation Street star Bill Roache avoids bankruptcy in court update

Earlier this year, it was reported that the Ken Barlow actor was going bankrupt for the second time in his life. In March, he was granted 12 weeks to settle his tax debt in March.

The Independent reports that Roache managed to sell off some property in order to end the dispute with His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, and yesterday, the case against him was officially dismissed by Chief Insolvency and Companies Court judge Nicholas Briggs at a London hearing.

Judge Stephen Baister had allowed an extension period for Roache to sort out his financial affairs.

Roache originally received a tax bill over investments made to a firm in the Cayman Islands.

At the time, a spokesperson for Coronation Street shared in a statement: “We’re really sorry to hear of Bill’s financial situation. Bill has an ongoing contract with Coronation Street and remains a much-loved member of the cast.”

HMRC went on to add: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts, and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”
